The publication of the first volumes of Notable American Women in 1971 was a watershed event in women's history. The biographical dictionary, supplemented by the appearance of Notable American Women: The Modern Period in 1980, became a standard reference book found in practically every library and on many scholars' bookshelves. This latest volume, edited by Susan Ware and Stacy Braukman, brings the project up to date, with entries on almost 500 women whose death dates fall between January 1, 1976 and December 31, 1999. Susan Ware's introductory essay surveys the challenge of living a woman's life but trying to make it in a man's world over the course of the twentieth century.
